Renters: City Council Petition 2024

We believe that every renter deserves the right to live in a home that meets basic standards of safety, comfort, and human dignity. We call upon the Albuquerque City Council to take immediate action to strengthen protections for renters and ensure that housing is safe, dignified, and fair for all renters.

This includes:

1. Making Air Conditioning a Legal Right: As climate change leads to increasingly hot desert summers, it is critical that Albuqeruque renters have access to air conditioning or adequate cooling systems in our homes to protect our health and well-being. Air conditioning should be considered a basic necessity in New Mexico rental housing.

2. Adding Enforcement: We demand the creation of stronger enforcement for existing rental laws. Landlords must be held accountable for maintaining safe and habitable living conditions, including prompt repairs, maintenance, and improvements. Renters deserve protections against unfair evictions, discrimination, and harassment.
